Explore New York's famous First Avenue
First Avenue was one of 12 roads that were laid across the length of Manhattan island from north-south, as part of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. Though work started on the avenue immediately after the plan was finalized, it was constructed in sections and only completed in the 19th century. Given the number of bicycles that traverse this avenue, a protected bike lane was earmarked in 2011. Running tangential to the United Nations Head Quarters, the road passes through neighbourhoods such the East Village, the Upper East Side, Yorkville and Spanish Harlem. A long walk or a short cab ride will take you to New York landmarks such as the Empire State Building, the Theater District, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Commercial outlets relevant to each New York neighborhood line First Avenue. Take a quick look at our guide below to find the perfect spots to explore during your visit.
