Mount Taranaki (also called Mount Egmont) is the massive volcano that stands in the background of many landscape photos of New Plymouth. The prefect, cone-shaped landform is the second-highest mountain on the North Island. There is a walking track that rises 2518 metres to the summit. The trail is rated advanced and the route as expert. Weather conditions can change suddenly, so be prepared for anything. Hiking up the volcano is best left to experienced trampers, but guided shorter walks of the area are available.
