One of the best-preserved 17th century goals, the Tolbooth Museum documents the progression of crime and punishment throughout the centuries. The former wardhouse retains many of its 17th and 18th century cells, giving visitors a chilling insight into the life and imprisonment of Jacobean rebels. The eerie atmosphere carries throughout the building - a haunting snapshot into long arm of the law and its heavy influence in Scottish social and political history. Due to its grisly past the Tolbooth Museum is considering one of Scotland’s most haunted sites, and has featured in numerous programs over the years. A popular attraction among visitors and locals, admission is free to the general public all year round.
