First Avenue - New York
Explore New York's famous First Avenue First Avenue was one of 12 roads that were laid across the length of Manhattan island from north-south, as part of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. Though work started on the avenue immediately after the plan was finalized, it was constructed in sections and only completed in the 19th century. Given the number of bicycles that traverse this avenue, a protected bike lane was earmarked in 2011. Running tangential to the United Nations Head Quarters, the road passes through neighbourhoods such the East Village, the Upper East Side, Yorkville and Spanish Harlem. A long walk or a short cab ride will take you to New York landmarks such as the Empire State Building, the Theater District, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York
Broadway
New York wouldn’t be the same without Broadway. With its abundance of shops, theaters, bars and restaurants stretching across the city from Columbus Circle to Union Square West, you’ll have to cross it at some point. Originally known as Wickquasgeck Trail, Broadway was carved into the brush of Manhattan by Native American inhabitants and the trail soon became the main road through the island. In the 18th century, Broadway ended at the town commons, north of Wall Street, where traffic continued to snake up the East side of the island via Eastern Post Road, the West Side via Bloomingdale Road, and the north of the Grand Circle, which is now Columbus Circle. The name ‘Broadway’ was then extended to the entire road, and today it’s just as busy as ever. When you’re crossing Broadway, keep these New York must-dos in mind.
Scottsdale
McCormick Ranch Scottsdale
McCormick Ranch is an interesting area of Scottsdale, which has become one of the largest planned communities in Arizona. In 1921, the area was owned by the Jolly family. They built a ranch and home on 160 acres, now the site of the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park on the corner of Scottsdale and Indian Bend Roads. In 1942, the land was acquired by Fowler and Anne McCormick, and for the next 12 years the couple developed their ranch, expanding it by buying adjoining parcels of land. McCormick Ranch now covers an area of approximately five square miles and includes beautiful golf courses, parks, sports grounds, tennis courts, 25 miles of recreational trails, and seven man-made lakes. The main streets are lined with high-end shops, boutiques and businesses along with the Scottsdale Pavilions outdoor shopping center.
